How to Replace a Pull Cord (Recoil Starter Rope)

Broken pull cord? Here's how to rewind and replace the starter rope on your small engine.

handyman Tools & Materials Needed

  • checkReplacement starter rope (correct length and diameter)
  • checkSocket set or screwdriver
  • checkNeedle-nose pliers
  • checkLighter or match
  • checkWork gloves
1

Disconnect the spark plug wire.

2

Remove the recoil starter assembly — usually 3-4 bolts on top of the engine shroud. Lift the whole assembly off.

3

If the old rope is still partially attached, note how it's wound and tied. Take a photo.

4

Remove the old rope from the pulley. If the rope broke inside, you'll need to pull the broken piece out of the pulley.

5

Wind the recoil spring: rotate the pulley counterclockwise (for most engines) about 6 full turns to pre-load the spring. Hold the pulley in position.

6

Thread the new rope through the hole in the housing, through the pulley hole, and tie a knot in the end. Melt the rope end with a lighter to prevent fraying before knotting.

7

Let the pulley slowly retract while guiding the rope to wind evenly. Don't let it snap back — the spring could come loose.

8

Thread the other end through the starter handle and tie a knot. Test the pull action — it should pull out smoothly and retract fully.

9

If the rope doesn't retract fully, add one more turn of pre-load to the spring. If it's too tight to pull out, remove a turn.

10

Reinstall the starter assembly on the engine. Test pull several times before reconnecting the spark plug wire.
