How to Replace Push Mower Wheels
Worn or broken wheels make mowing miserable. Here's how to swap them out for smooth rolling.
handyman Tools & Materials Needed
- checkReplacement wheels (match size and axle diameter)
- checkPliers or E-clip remover
- checkWrench (if bolt-on)
- checkLubricant spray
Tip the mower on its side or prop it up securely so you can access the wheel.
Identify how the wheel is attached. Most push mower wheels use either an E-clip on the axle, a cotter pin, or a bolt.
For E-clip style: use pliers or a flat screwdriver to pry the E-clip off the axle. Keep the clip — you'll reuse it or use the one from the new wheel.
For cotter pin style: straighten the pin legs with pliers and pull it out.
Slide the old wheel off the axle. If stuck, spray lubricant on the axle and tap the back of the wheel gently.
Inspect the axle for wear, bending, or rust. Clean and lubricate with spray lube.
Slide the new wheel onto the axle. Make sure any height adjustment holes align if it's a height-adjustable wheel.
Secure with the E-clip, cotter pin, or bolt. Make sure the wheel spins freely without wobbling.
For self-propelled mowers: make sure the new wheel's gear teeth (inside the wheel) mesh properly with the drive gear. A mismatched wheel won't engage the drive system.
