How to Replace String Trimmer Line (Weed Eater)
Restring your string trimmer head with new cutting line — the most common trimmer maintenance task.
handyman Tools & Materials Needed
- checkReplacement trimmer line (correct diameter for your model)
- checkScissors or utility knife
Turn off the trimmer and unplug or remove the battery (electric) or let it cool (gas). Disconnect the spark plug wire on gas models.
Remove the trimmer head spool. Most heads have a push tab or twist-off cover on the bottom. Remove the cover and pull out the spool.
Remove any remaining old line from the spool. Clean out grass and debris from inside the head.
Cut a length of new line — typically 15-25 feet depending on your spool. Check your manual for the correct line diameter (common sizes: 0.065", 0.080", 0.095").
Find the anchor point on the spool — usually a small hole or slot. Insert one end of the line into the anchor.
Wind the line onto the spool in the direction of the arrow printed on the spool. Wind evenly and tightly — don't overlap or cross the line.
Leave about 6 inches of line unwound. Tuck the loose end into the holding slot on the edge of the spool to keep it from unwinding.
Place the spool back into the head with the line end(s) threaded through the exit hole(s) in the housing.
Replace the cover and snap or twist it back into place. Pull the line ends to release them from the holding slots.
Test by bumping the head on the ground — the bump feed mechanism should release more line smoothly.
