handyman Tools & Materials Needed

Turn off the mower and remove the key. Locate the battery — usually under the seat or hood.
Disconnect the NEGATIVE (black, minus) cable first. This prevents short circuits. Loosen the terminal clamp and pull it off.
Disconnect the POSITIVE (red, plus) cable second.
Remove any hold-down bracket or strap securing the battery. Lift the old battery out — they're heavy (15-25 lbs).
Clean the cable terminals and clamps with a wire brush. Remove all corrosion (white or green buildup).
Place the new battery in the tray with terminals in the correct orientation. Secure with the hold-down bracket.
Connect the POSITIVE (red) cable first. Tighten the clamp snugly but don't overtighten.
Connect the NEGATIVE (black) cable second. Tighten snugly.
Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease or petroleum jelly to both terminals to prevent future corrosion.
Test: turn the key and verify the engine cranks and starts normally.
