How to Mix 2-Stroke Fuel for Trimmers, Chainsaws, and Blowers
Getting the fuel mix ratio wrong damages 2-stroke engines. Here's how to mix it correctly every time.
handyman Tools & Materials Needed
- checkApproved fuel container (with ratio markings if possible)
- check2-stroke engine oil (TC-W3 or manufacturer-specified)
- checkFresh gasoline (87+ octane, ethanol-free preferred)
Check your equipment's manual for the correct fuel-to-oil ratio. Common ratios: 50:1 (most modern 2-strokes), 40:1 (some older models), 32:1 (older chainsaws).
For 50:1 ratio: mix 2.6 ounces of 2-stroke oil per gallon of gasoline. For 40:1: mix 3.2 ounces per gallon.
Start by pouring half the gasoline into a clean, approved fuel container.
Add the measured amount of 2-stroke oil.
Add the remaining gasoline. This helps mix the oil thoroughly.
Cap the container and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
Label the container with the mix ratio and date. Use within 30 days for best results, or add fuel stabilizer.
NEVER use straight gasoline in a 2-stroke engine — it will seize within minutes from lack of lubrication. And never use 2-stroke mix in a 4-stroke engine.
Use ethanol-free gasoline when available. Ethanol-blended fuel degrades faster and causes more carburetor issues in 2-stroke equipment.
