How to Change the Oil in a Snow Blower

Snow blower oil change guide — keep your machine ready for winter storms.

handyman Tools & Materials Needed

  • checkSocket wrench
  • checkOil drain pan
  • checkFresh 5W-30 oil (check manual)
  • checkFunnel
  • checkRags
1

Run the snow blower for 3-5 minutes to warm the oil. This helps it drain completely.

2

Turn off the engine. Disconnect the spark plug wire.

3

Locate the oil drain plug — usually on the bottom or side of the engine. Some models drain through the dipstick tube (you tip the machine).

4

Place the drain pan underneath and remove the plug. Let all oil drain — tilt the machine gently if needed to get the last bit.

5

Replace the drain plug and tighten snug.

6

Fill with fresh oil through the fill cap. Most single-stage blowers take about 20 ounces; two-stage blowers take 32-40 ounces. Use 5W-30 for cold weather operation.

7

Check the dipstick — fill to the full mark but don't overfill.

8

Reconnect the spark plug wire. Run the engine briefly and recheck the level.

9

Change the oil at the start and end of each snow season, or every 50 hours of use.
