How to Check and Add Oil to Your Lawn Mower

Step-by-step guide to checking your lawn mower's oil level — the most basic maintenance task every mower owner should know.

Checking your oil is the simplest and most important maintenance task you can do for your lawn mower. It takes 30 seconds and can prevent thousands of dollars in engine damage.

When to check: before every use. Make it a habit — every time you're about to mow, check the oil first. It only takes a moment.

How to check on a push mower: make sure the mower is on a flat, level surface. Locate the oil fill cap or dipstick — it's usually on the side or top of the engine, often yellow or marked with an oil can symbol. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a rag, reinsert it fully without screwing it in, then pull it out again. The oil level should be between the two marks or holes on the dipstick.

How to check on a riding mower: same process, but the dipstick is usually easier to access. Some riding mowers have a sight glass on the engine instead of a dipstick.

What to look for: the oil level should be within the acceptable range. If it's low, add oil — but don't overfill. Too much oil is almost as bad as too little. Also look at the oil's color and consistency. Fresh oil is amber or honey-colored. If it's pitch black, gritty, or smells burnt, it's time for a change.

What oil to use: check your owner's manual. Most small engines call for SAE 30 for warm weather use or 10W-30 for variable temperatures. Some newer engines specify full synthetic. Never use automotive multi-grade oils like 5W-20 unless your manual specifically says to.

Adding oil: add a little at a time — small engines don't hold much (most push mowers hold about 15-20 ounces). Add a few ounces, recheck the dipstick, and repeat until you're at the correct level.

Running a mower with low or no oil will destroy the engine in minutes. No exaggeration — we've seen engines seize after just a few minutes of operation without oil. The repair cost? Usually more than the mower is worth. Thirty seconds of checking can prevent that.
