Spring Startup Checklist for Your Harley-Davidson
Get your Harley ready for riding season with this essential spring startup checklist from an independent Harley service shop.
After months in the garage, your Harley needs more than just a key turn to be road-ready. Here's the spring startup checklist we use at Cherrone Equipment Service before every first ride of the season.
Start with the battery. If you had a tender connected all winter, you're probably fine. If not, charge it fully and load-test it. A weak battery that cranks slowly is a sign it needs replacing — don't get stranded.
Check all fluid levels: engine oil, primary, transmission, and brake fluid. If the bike sat with old oil, now is the time for a full fluid service. Old oil accumulates moisture and acids that corrode engine internals.
Inspect your tires carefully. Look for cracks, flat spots from sitting, and check the date codes on the sidewall. Tires older than 5-6 years should be replaced regardless of tread depth. Set pressures to spec.
Test both brakes before you leave the driveway. Squeeze the front lever and press the rear pedal — they should feel firm, not spongy. Spongy brakes mean air in the lines or worn pads.
Check your belt or chain tension and condition. Look for cracks, fraying, or missing teeth on belts. Chains should be cleaned, lubed, and adjusted to the proper spec.
Test all lights: headlight (high and low), tail light, brake light (front and rear lever), and turn signals. Replace any burned-out bulbs before hitting the road.
Finally, take a short test ride in your neighborhood before heading out on the highway. Listen for unusual noises, feel for vibrations, and make sure everything shifts and stops properly.
If you'd rather have a pro handle it, our Pre-Season Inspection is $65 and covers all of this plus a few extras. We'll have you road-ready and confident.
